GUNNER's story
Gunner was initially surrendered to the shelter with his brother, Murphy, when their owner had a baby and discovered that they no longer had enough time or strength to handle both dogs. Most recently, Gunner was adopted for 5 months but has returned to the shelter after causing $1,500 in damages to his owner''s housing as a result of his separation anxiety. Regular wire kennels are not up to the task of containing Gunner; he is a big strong boy who can break out of them and wreak havoc on his surroundings. Gunner desparately needs a family who can work with his separation anxiety and also give him the time, exercise and attention he needs as a young, active, working breed.
Gunner''s first family stated that he was used to living in a fenced yard and loved to play with his brother, but had never been around other dogs, cats or children. Gunner''s most recent owner indicated that Gunner does well with older children and great with adults, but is too big and boisterous to safely coexist with babies or younger children. After living with his most recent family, they were able to report that Gunner generally does well with other dogs his size when properly introduced (mutual visits with any other dogs in the home are encouraged!); he is NOT good with small dogs, cats, or pocket pets and should go to a home without those animals. Gunner was adopted for a THIRD time on 6/29/18 and returned a day later because he was chasing the two cats in the household. THE ANIMAL TENDERS REQUEST THAT ANY PROSPECTIVE OWNERS PLEASE READ ABOUT GUNNER''S BEHAVIOR WITH SMALL ANIMALS AND REFRAIN FROM ADOPTING HIM IF THE PROSPECTIVE HOUSEHOLD HAS SMALL ANIMALS, CATS, OR SMALL CHILDREN. Gunner is a nice boy, but putting him in a home with any of the above does him a great disservice as he will likely end up back at the shelter
According to the previous owners, Gunner is housebroken (whines) and rides well in the car. Gunner has had very little formal training; while he knows the command `sit`, he is still lacking in the manners department and would benefit from obedience classes. Gunner is a very high energy breed and will need more than just a walk daily; he will need both physical and mental stimulation every day to avoid destructive habits.
